Vintner is the traditional term used to describe a wine merchant. In modern use, the term vintner is synonymous with winemaker.

The word vintner comes from the English language, specifically the Middle English period of the English language. Vintners were among some of the more prominent individuals in the 14th and 15th centuries. The term of vintner is observed in American English and has taken a slightly different meaning. In the United States, a winemaker can be referred to as a vintner. The responsibilities of a vintner include working with viticulturists, determining grape harvest dates, managing the wine making processes, developing bottling strategies and maintaining quality throughout the entire winemaking process. With the increased use of technology in winemaking processes, many professional vintners possess degrees in viticulture and oenology.
